In Canada, the humble toque (or tuque, or touque) is more than just winter headgear — it’s a linguistic debate. Ask three Canadians how to spell it, and you’ll get four nice opinions.
The word comes from French (toque), but Quebecers said “Non, c’est une tuque.” English Canadians started writing “touque” as a peace offering to vowels, but now nobody’s happy. Even autocorrect has given up and just suggests “Maybe wear a hat?”
